Morning Constitutional

The sounds of man repeatedly falling down can be heard across the land this morning. The giant furnaces with faces are gathering at the edge of town. They demand fresh fuel and more respect. The birds of our county are wearing striped purple socks in honor of their fallen king. I’d love a glass of Ovaltine hot followed by a four hour walk to get the spider knots out of my back, but I have no milk. Millions of my neighbors, most invisible to all but me and my dog, are arming themselves with the knowledge of ages in order to catch the gray river trout that fill our lakes. Catch one for me, boys! It is a day like any other and still as unique as a babe’s face. Spend some time today with one of those books that depict various textures and surfaces through pasted on bits of fabric...

Nightcap 02/18/11

Row after row of ice skates on sale after this recent heat spell in the state of Michigan. The impending doom of winter blizzard hell has vanished fir now. We can breathe deep, the breath of suburban heroes for having survived the cold. We did it without complaint and without appropriate hats.
And we’ll do it again, when the great curse cycles back around. And we are forced to bow once agin and receive our lashes from the wind gods.

The previous governor, Democrat Jim Doyle, passed a budget that left the state poised for a surplus this year. When Walker took office in January he chipped away at that surplus with three conservative tax expenditure bills, but not severely enough to trigger a budget repair bill. The current, small shortfall was “manufactured by Governor Walker’s own insistence on making the deficit worse with the bills he passed in January,” Kreitlow said. But Walker cited that shortfall to introduce a “budget repair bill” anyhow — a fully elective move that includes his plan to end collective bargaining rights for state employees.
